Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

The Landlord’s Manor House in Berthelsdorf

Zinzendorf's first manor house

Zinzendorf’s first manor house or Herrschaftshaus was in the village of Berthelsdorf in Saxony in eastern Germany. It was part of the estate he purchased in 1722 with the inheritance he received. This was the house where he and his bride lived after leaving Ebersdorf. Over the doorway [seen below], on the left and the right, were these inscriptions:

As guests we only here remain;
And hence this house is slight and plain.

We have a better house above.
And there we fix our warmest love.

In addition, two verses were cited but not written out: Zechariah 9:12, “Turn to the stronghold, O prisoners with hope.

This very day I am declaring that I will restore double to you”; and 2 Corinthians 5:1-2, “For we know that if our earthly tabernacle dwelling is taken down, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. For also in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our dwelling place from heaven.”
