Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

Wedding of Benigna and Johannes von Watteville

Picture of Wedding

Zinzendorf conducted the wedding of his daughter Benigna (1725-1786) to Johannes von Watteville (1718-1788) on May 21, 1746, in the Orangery of the Zeist Castle. This was followed by a civil marriage since in Holland, at that time, only the Reformed Church could perform legal marriages. This painting was done on vellum and was given to Erdmuth Dorothea von Zinzendorf on her 46th birthday, November 7. The wedding is depicted at the bottom of the painting. This hall became the meeting place of the Moravians.
