Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

Zinzendorf and the Watchwords

Picture of Zinzendorf in later years

Zinzendorf in this painting is shown with the Watchwords (Daily Texts) for 1760 which puts him at the age of 59 or 60. The Watchwords (Daily Manna or Morning Revival) were begun as daily Scripture texts selected by Zinzendorf for the following day. They were first printed in 1731. The last ones prepared by Zinzendorf, shortly before his death, were for the year 1761. Today’s Watchwords include Old Testament and New Testament verses, hymns, and a prayer all illustrating a particular theme.
